Oil Heat Repair

Oil Heat Repair Across Rhode Island and Southern Massachusetts

Oil heat is everywhere in Rhode Island. It's dependable and it puts out real warmth, but the burner, fuel line, and tank all need regular attention to keep working through a New England winter. When something goes wrong, you want a company that knows oil systems from the nozzle to the tank.

That's been our specialty for over 125 years. We repair and service oil-fired equipment in homes across Pawtucket, Cumberland, Bristol, Burrillville, Providence, Cranston, and the rest of our service area, and because we also deliver heating oil, one call covers both the system and the fuel. It's all part of our service and repair work.

Call 401-722-0080 and a licensed oil-heat technician will diagnose the problem and tell you straight what it takes to fix it.

What Oil Heat Repair Covers

Whether your home runs an oil furnace or an oil boiler, the burner is the heart of it. The burner draws oil from the tank, sprays it through a nozzle, ignites it with electrodes, and a control box watches the flame to keep everything safe. Most oil-heat breakdowns trace back to one of those parts, the fuel filter, or the tank itself.

We service the whole oil chain: the burner and its components, the fuel line and filter, the pump, the controls, and the tank. That full-system view is what separates a real oil-heat technician from someone who only knows one piece of the puzzle.

Know the Signs

Common Oil Heat Problems We Fix

1

System won't start or keeps locking out

The burner tries to fire, fails, and trips the reset. Usual causes are an empty tank, a clogged nozzle or filter, a dirty flame sensor, or bad electrodes.

2

Oil or soot smell

A strong oil odor or black soot around the unit means incomplete combustion from a dirty or maladjusted burner. It wastes fuel and needs cleaning and a combustion test.

3

Rumble or puff at startup

A boom or puff of smoke when the burner lights is delayed ignition, where oil pools before igniting. It's hard on the system and should be serviced right away.

4

Runs, then shuts off

Short cycling on an oil system usually points to a clogged fuel filter or nozzle, a weak pump, or a failing control restricting steady fuel flow.

5

Using more oil than usual

If your tank empties faster with no change in weather or habits, the burner is running inefficiently. A tune-up restores clean combustion and lowers usage.

6

Water or sludge in the tank

Condensation and old sludge clog the line and starve the burner. We can diagnose tank issues and keep your fuel flowing clean.

Stop pressing the reset button

Pressing the burner reset more than once or twice pumps raw oil into the combustion chamber, which is a fire hazard and turns a small fix into a big one. If your system locks out, confirm you have oil, then call us at 401-722-0080.

Annual Service

What's in an Oil Burner Tune-Up

An oil system needs service once a year, ideally before heating season. A proper tune-up keeps combustion clean, catches small problems early, and is the single best way to avoid a mid-winter no-heat call. Here's what we cover.

Replace nozzle & oil filter

Fresh nozzle and filter restore a clean, correctly sized spray pattern and steady fuel flow.

Inspect & set electrodes

We check ignition electrodes and the transformer so the burner lights cleanly every cycle.

Clean burner & chamber

We remove soot from the burner, heat exchanger, and chamber so the system runs efficiently.

Test pump & strainer

We check pump pressure and clean the strainer so the burner gets the fuel it needs.

Combustion & efficiency test

We measure combustion and adjust for clean, efficient firing that holds all winter.

Safety & controls check

We verify the cad cell, limit controls, and safety shutoffs so the system fails safe, not dangerous.

Most of our customers fold this into an oil service plan, which schedules the tune-up automatically and adds priority service and repair discounts.

Oil Heat Repair FAQ

Why does my oil system keep hitting the reset button?
A lockout means the burner tried to fire and the control shut it down for safety. Common causes are an empty tank, a clogged nozzle or fuel filter, a dirty cad cell, or worn electrodes. Don't keep pressing reset, since that floods the chamber with oil. Confirm you have fuel, then call us.
How often should an oil heating system be serviced?
Once a year, ideally before the heating season starts. An annual oil burner tune-up keeps combustion clean and efficient and catches worn parts before they cause a breakdown. It's the cheapest insurance against a no-heat night.
Why does my oil heat smell like oil or soot?
A strong oil odor or black soot usually means incomplete combustion from a dirty or maladjusted burner, and sometimes a small leak. It wastes fuel and should be addressed. We clean the burner and run a combustion test to set it right.
I ran out of oil. Can you deliver and restart the system?
Yes. We can deliver fuel and restart the burner in the same visit. A burner that has run completely dry often needs to be bled and primed before it fires again, and our technicians handle that as part of the call.
Do you repair oil heat even if you don't deliver my oil?
Absolutely. We service oil-fired systems from all major brands regardless of who delivers your fuel. If you'd like one company handling both the system and the delivery, we can take over that too.
